How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Laptop’s Battery

The battery in your laptop will ultimately die, no matter how well you treat it.
If you're lucky, by the time your laptop's battery dies, it'll be time to replace it.
You'll need to replace the battery if you aren't.
Death of a battery does not have to be sudden.
When your battery's capacity drops to dangerously low levels, Windows will alert you, but you may also monitor it yourself.

Windows Will Issue a Warning
When your battery reaches a certain capacity level, Windows will notify you.
When you click the red X on the standard battery icon in your system tray, Windows will tell you that you should "consider replacing your battery," and that your computer may shut down unexpectedly because of a problem with your battery — in other words, your battery can't hold enough charge to power your laptop for long when it isn't connected to an outlet.
This warning was added in Windows 7, so if you're running Windows Vista or XP, you won't see it.

How to Check the Battery Capacity of Your Laptop
If you want to see how much your laptop's battery capacity has degraded, you can utilize a third-party tool.
BatteryInfoView, a free program from NirSoft, displays the battery's approximate wear level, the capacity it was supposed to have, and the capacity it now has.
The battery, for example, was designed to hold 86,580 mWh of energy, as shown in the screenshot below.
The battery's current capacity at full charge, on the other hand, is just 61,261 mWh.
In other words, when completely charged, the laptop's battery only holds 70.8 percent of its original capacity.
More information, such as the number of charge and discharge cycles, may be displayed on some batteries.

Getting Your Battery Right
If your battery requires calibration, the information above may not be totally accurate.
For example, one of our batteries indicated that it was almost dead.
The battery appeared to be at 27.7% wear level, according to its reported capacity, and Windows alerted us that it was time to replace it.
Windows ceased alerting us after we calibrated the batteries, and the battery's indicated capacity returned to 70.8 percent.
Although the battery did not receive any additional charge, the calibration enabled the sensor to accurately determine the battery's capacity.
If Windows indicates that your battery has to be replaced, calibrate it first before verifying its real wear level.
If you don't, you risk having to replace a dead battery.

Why Your Laptop’s Battery Capacity Declines

A variety of causes cause laptop batteries to degrade.
Heat, usage, and age are all detrimental to batteries.
Even if you stored your battery in a closet and never touched it, it would steadily lose capacity due to age.
However, if you never use your battery — for example, if you use your laptop at your desk and it becomes hot, which is terrible for the battery – removing the battery can help it last longer.

Battery Replacement

You can replace your battery pretty easily if your laptop has a user-serviceable battery – one that you can remove on your own.
If your laptop's battery isn't user-serviceable, you'll need to call the manufacturer to have it cracked open and the battery replaced for you.
You can get a replacement battery for your laptop model online if you have a user-serviceable battery.
Instead of buying the cheapest third-party batteries on eBay, purchase authentic batteries from a reputed supplier.
Aftermarket batteries are frequently made on the cheap, with sloppy workmanship and minimal testing.
They can be dangerous - a shoddy, counterfeit, or poorly built battery could burst into flames.

It's pointless to obsess over your battery's capacity - after all, it was made to be utilized — but it's something to keep an eye on.
If your battery's capacity is dwindling faster than you'd like, it's possible that you could treat it better.
If you keep your laptop's battery in while playing demanding, taxing PC games, you may be exposing it to too much heat.
